MENENDEZ BROTHERS: Ryan Murphy, creator of the Netflix series, isn’t surprised at the possibility of the brothers being released
Erik and Lyle Menendez were sentenced to life in prison in 1996 for the murder of their parents. However, with the release of the series about the case, new evidence has come to light, raising the possibility that the brothers might be released soon. Ryan Murphy, the series’ writer, stated that he wasn’t entirely surprised by this development: “I can’t say I was surprised, because when we finished filming and I watched the episodes, I realized they were extremely impactful in presenting different perspectives,” Murphy commented at a Netflix FYC panel.
He also emphasized that the series’ goal was precisely that: to present multiple points of view. “I believe what the series did by highlighting and questioning sexual abuse was very, very significant. And, whether people like it or not, there is a movement among young people to address this topic in a way that wasn’t possible in 1989,” he added.
Ryan Murphy further explained that it’s up to the audience to interpret the Menendez brothers’ case and decide whether they believe in the version presented.
