Donald Trump wins crucial states and extends his lead over Kamala Harris
Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for President of the United States, scored an important victory in Georgia, according to information from the Associated Press (AP). With this win, he secures 16 new delegates in the race for the succession of Joe Biden, extending his lead over Vice President Kamala Harris.
Although the official election day in the U.S. was Tuesday, November 5, voters had already been casting their ballots since the previous month, both in person and by mail. The vote-counting process began on the night of the election day.
Unlike the Brazilian electoral system, the U.S. model is decentralized, with each state responsible for organizing the voting. Therefore, the process of tallying and announcing results can vary. It’s also important to note that in the United States, the winner of the popular vote doesn’t always become president, as the election is decided by the delegates. The candidate who reaches 270 out of 538 delegates is the winner of the presidential race.
