ROUND 6: Actor Seong Gi-hun Says Second Season Is “Impeccable!”
Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun in “Squid Game”, spoke about the second season of the series, which will arrive on Netflix at the end of 2024, more than three years after the debut of the first season that became one of the platform’s biggest hits. Additionally, the series has been renewed for a third and final season, set for 2025.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lee Jung-jae recalled his surprise upon receiving the script for the second season, created and written by Hwang Dong-hyuk: “I didn’t think he would write it so quickly; I doubted he could pull it off”, the actor said. “When I finally read [the scripts], I thought, ‘This is impeccable, there’s nothing that needs changing’. The writing was so good that I was impressed, thinking, ‘This man is a genius’”, continued Lee Jung-jae.
The actor also commented on the significant transformation of his character between the seasons: “The way you see Gi-hun in the first season is quite different from the state he is in during the second season”. He also mentioned that returning to the studios with an almost entirely new cast was “a very strange experience”.
The confirmation of the third season came with a message from Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director, writer, and executive producer of the series. He highlighted the nearly three years that have passed since the first season became a global phenomenon and shared his excitement about returning to the series’ universe: “On the day we started filming the second season, I thought, ‘Wow! I can’t believe I’m back in the Squid Game universe’. It was a surreal feeling, and I’m eager to see how the audience will react to the comeback after this time”, he wrote.
He concluded the message by saying: “It’s amazing to see that the seed planted with the creation of ‘Squid Game’ has grown and is bearing fruit leading to the conclusion of this story. We’ll dedicate ourselves to the fullest so that you all have another memorable journey. I hope you’re ready for what’s to come. Thank you very much, and see you soon!”
