MENENDEZ BROTHERS: Daughter of George W. Bush, Claims Erik and Lyle’s Case is Affecting Her Mental Health
The developments in the controversial case of the Menendez brothers seem to have also affected Jenna Bush Hager, co-host of “Today with Hoda & Jenna” and daughter of former U.S. President George W. Bush.
Erik and Lyle Menendez, sentenced to life in prison for the 1986 murder of their parents, have once again become the center of attention following the release of the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”, produced by Ryan Murphy. The series has reignited the debate over the case, to the point where the Los Angeles district attorney suggested a new sentencing, taking into account the abuse the brothers claim to have suffered from their parents.
During an appearance on Today, Bush Hager shared with Hoda Kotb and pop culture correspondent Naz Perez that she is deeply involved with the Menendez case, to the point that her husband has expressed concern, as reported by Decider: “I’ve been deeply involved with the Menendez brothers, very deeply”, Bush confessed during the show. Kotb confirmed, “Yes, she is”. In a light-hearted tone, Bush Hager added, “So involved that my husband is worried about my mental health”.
Perez noted that while Murphy’s fictionalized approach has revived public interest, the brothers consider the series “harmful”. She explained that given the brothers’ age at the time of the crime in 1989, they could be treated as juvenile offenders and therefore might qualify for parole.
After a large social media mobilization from family members and supporters around the world, a hearing has been scheduled for December 11 to assess Erik and Lyle’s situation. The brothers’ lawyer has requested the reclassification of their murder conviction to manslaughter, as revealed by TMZ.
If the request is granted, the Menendez brothers could be released after more than 30 years in prison, having served three times the sentence originally imposed for the crime they were convicted of.
