Bill Skarsgård reveals that he was very scared while working on the remake of “Nosferatu”

Bill Skarsgård, who will play Count Orlok in the new version of “Nosferatu,” shared details about the transformation process to bring the character to life in the film directed by Robert Eggers. The actor compared the experience to the change he underwent while portraying the frightening clown Pennywise in “It: Chapter One,” stating that the transformation was even more intense.

Although the vampire’s look has not yet been fully revealed in the released images, Skarsgård raised fans’ expectations by discussing the process. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that he was surprised when he saw his version of the character for the first time: “I was terrified when I looked at the image. It was so, so different from me, much more than Pennywise. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to act with that, that it would just look like big prosthetic pieces and I wouldn’t be able to bring the character to life,” he said.

The actor stated that he only truly felt connected to the character after the second camera test when the director said, “There he is,” indicating that he had finally found the right way to portray the vampire.

The new adaptation of “Nosferatu” has been receiving much praise since its press screening. The reimagining of the 1922 classic, directed by F.W. Murnau, brings a visually stunning and dark approach, being considered a masterpiece of modern horror. According to Variety, the film is “magnificent and terrifying.”

Courtney Howard from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association called Nosferatu “the boldest film of the year,” while Gregory Ellwood from The Playlist stated that the film is a strong technical contender at awards and mentioned a potential Oscar nomination for Lily-Rose Depp for Best Supporting Actress.

Robert Eggers promised that his version of “Nosferatu” would bring vampires back to their roots, when they were truly terrifying. In an interview with TotalFilm, Eggers explained: “We got to Edward Cullen, where vampires are no longer scary. So, how can we go in the opposite direction of that? Vampires were so feared that people would dig up corpses, tear them apart, and burn them. I think we deserve a scary, stinky corpse again.”

The film will hit theaters on January 2, 2025.
