Carrie-Anne Moss Claims That “The Matrix” Was Meant to Be a Romance

Carrie-Anne Moss, who portrayed Trinity in the “Matrix” franchise, shared her perspective on the meaning of the original film, revealing that, for her, the story has always been essentially a love story.

In a conversation with Collider, the actress discussed how her interpretation of the iconic 1999 film differed from that of other cast members and the approach of the directors, who often explored philosophical themes: “I understood it from an emotional place; for me, it was a love story. At the dinners we had with the whole cast and the directors, everyone was talking about super-intellectual books they were reading, which I found complex at the time. For me, it wasn’t something that was up here [in the head], but here [in the heart]. I think Trinity really represents the heart of the movie, especially in the first one. So, for me, that made sense”, said Carrie-Anne Moss.

This perspective from Moss seems fitting, as without the compelling romance between Neo and Trinity, the film would have less heart, which could weaken both the science fiction elements and the narrative impact.

The official synopsis reads: “Young programmer Thomas Anderson is haunted by strange nightmares in which he is connected to a vast computer system of the future. With the repetition of these dreams, he begins to question his own reality”.
