1 – THE TRILOGY WAS SHOT ALL AT ONCE

The filming of the three movies took place simultaneously. The chosen locations were the lush forests and mountains of New Zealand, the home country of the renowned director Peter Jackson. Nowadays, these settings have become iconic tourist destinations, visited by many fans of the trilogy.

2 – THOUSANDS OF ARROWS AND ARMORS

Throughout the production of the films, approximately 10,000 facial prosthetics, 1,200 sets of armor, 2,000 weapon replicas, 10,000 arrows, and over 20,000 extras were employed. The production team consisted of 2,400 members, and 68 miniature sets were created for the filming. It’s worth mentioning the impressive 1,600 hobbit prosthetic feet used in the recordings as well.

3 – CAST GOT TATTOOED

In 2013, during an interview, Orlando Bloom confirmed rumors that all the actors who played roles in the trilogy’s fellowship got matching tattoos. According to Bloom, the tattoo symbolizes the number “nine” in Elvish.

4 – BROKEN RIBS AND TEETH

It’s a little-known fact that Orlando Bloom suffered a rib fracture during the filming of the scene in The Two Towers where his character was thrown off a horse. Surprisingly, the actor playing Legolas insisted on continuing filming the next day despite the accident.

Other incidents marked the filming. Viggo Mortensen, who portrays Aragorn, broke a tooth and two fingers during the shoots. Meanwhile, Sean Astin, who brings Samwise Gamgee to life, cut his foot and needed twenty stitches after a scene where he enters the water in search of Frodo.

5 – HEAVY MAKEUP

Liv Tyler, known for her role as Arwen Undómiel, revealed that removing the elf ears was an extremely uncomfortable process. According to the actress, they were attached to the skin with adhesive and painted to achieve the desired effect.

As for Frodo’s hobbit feet, preparing them for filming was a task that required at least an hour and a half. Elijah Wood, who played the character, had to wake up every day at five in the morning to apply the prosthetics to his feet using glue.

6 – CHALLENGES IN CREATING GOLLUM

Although his character was computer-generated, Andy Serkis, who brought Gollum to life, participated in scenes with the live-action actors. To ensure synchronization of his facial and bodily movements, the actor wore a lycra suit equipped with sensors that recorded his movements to be later digitized by computer. He recorded each scene separately, first alone, then with his colleagues in front of a blue screen, and finally, in a real-life setting.

7 – FAMOUS ACTORS TURNED DOWN ROLES IN THE TRILOGY

Sean Connery declined the role of Gandalf due to his lack of familiarity with the books and difficulty in understanding the script. On the other hand, names like Nicolas Cage, Russell Crowe, and Jason Patrick were considered to play Aragorn.

8 – TALL DWARF

Although he played the role of a dwarf, John Rhys-Davies, the actor who portrayed Gimli, was actually the tallest member of the Fellowship of the Ring, standing at 6’1″ FEET.

9 – ARAGORN THE POLYGLOT

Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed the hero Aragorn, dedicated himself to becoming fluent in the Elvish language for the films. Additionally, he already had proficiency in English, Italian, French, Spanish, and Danish.
