MOANA 2: Industry Professionals Claim Box Office May Surpass “Inside Out 2”
Despite recent box office disappointments, such as “Joker: Folie à Deux”, the holiday season is approaching and could bring in strong earnings with films like “Moana 2”, “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Wicked”.
“Some industry professionals are telling me that Moana 2 may even surpass the success of ‘Inside Out 2′”, said Adam Aron, CEO of AMC, in an official statement to Deadline.
For those who don’t remember, “Inside Out 2” had the second-largest opening of 2024 for Walt Disney Studios, grossing US$154.2 million on its opening weekend. In total, the animated film grossed US$1.697 billion at the box office, with US$652.9 million coming from the United States alone.
Recent projections suggest that “Moana 2” could gross over US$100 million during the five days between Wednesday and Sunday of Thanksgiving week, with an estimate of US$75-82 million just from Friday to Sunday.
The first film in the franchise opened with US$82 million over five days and went on to gross US$248.7 million domestically and US$643 million worldwide.
And the expectations don’t stop there: the musical adaptation of “Wicked” is expected to earn US$80 million on its opening weekend before Thanksgiving, just behind “Gladiator II”, which is projected to make US$65 million.
It’s worth noting that “Moana 2” will hit theaters on November 28.
