PENGUIN: Actress Cristin Milioti Talks About the Shocking Ending of the Series and the Complexity of the Characters
The final episode of Penguin brought surprising revelations and unexpected twists, marking the end of the hit series on Max in a memorable way. After the season finale, Cristin Milioti, who played Sofia Falcone, shared her thoughts on the storyline’s conclusion.
SPOILERS: In the final episode, Oz overcomes his confrontation with Sofia and has the chance to eliminate his great enemy. However, he chooses to hand her over to the authorities, devising a plan to send her back to Arkham Asylum, her worst nightmare.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Cristin Milioti talked about the rivalry between Oz and Sofia, praising showrunner Lauren LeFranc: “This is what makes their rivalry so intense. They know how to condemn each other to a fate worse than death. He really knows how to hit the right spot, which is terrible. I’m always impressed by Lauren’s genius. There’s a phrase, ‘shocking, but inevitable,’ and that’s how their dynamic plays out,” said Milioti.
The actress also commented on how deeply Oz and Sofia know each other, which allows them to know exactly how to hurt one another: “They’re so close that they know exactly how to hit each other’s weak spot, and that would make them great partners. But instead, they end up destroying each other’s lives,” she stated.
Director Matt Reeves and showrunner Lauren LeFranc celebrated the opportunity to revisit Gotham in their new project.
“Colin did an amazing job as the Penguin in Batman, and having the chance to explore this character’s life in depth on HBO Max is truly exciting,” said Matt Reeves, director of Batman. “Dylan and I are thrilled to work with Lauren to continue Oz’s story as he relentlessly seeks power in Gotham.”
“I’ve always been a fan of the Batman universe, and Matt’s film is a powerful and bold entry into the canon. I’m so excited and honored to keep telling stories in Gotham City’s dark world. And what better way to explore my villainous side than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot? I’m thrilled to work with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners, and HBO Max as we strive to bring this story to the screen,” added Lauren LeFranc.
All eight episodes of the acclaimed production are now available on Max.
