Tom Hanks says he is tired of superhero movies and sees no purpose in their continued existence
Tom Hanks is yet another renowned name in Hollywood who shows little interest in the new superhero films produced by Marvel and DC.
In an interview, the actor expressed a certain fatigue with this subgenre: “I think there was a time when both DC and the MCU released incredible films that reflected the best version of ourselves. Sometimes, I felt like an X-Men. I felt Spider-Man’s confusion, Batman’s anger, and love for my country, like Captain America. I wish I could be like those characters”, Hanks shared with ComicBook. “But we’ve been in this scenario for 15, 20 years, and we’ve reached a point where we ask: ‘What is the story? What is the theme? What is this movie trying to convey?”‘ he added.
“That’s a big challenge for any filmmaker, but it may not be well received by the industry. Often, they say: ‘Well, this works and will work again’. The audience is well ahead of that. They recognize what is familiar and think: “I’ve seen this before. What’s next?” It’s not just about looks, but about the story. Talk about me. We are entering new territory”, added the actor known for classics like “Forrest Gump”, “Cast Away”, and “The Green Mile”.
Currently, Hanks is preparing for the release of “Here”, a new film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The plot takes place in a single living room and follows the events and residents of that space, from the past to the future. Besides Hanks and Robin Wright, who will be digitally rejuvenated to portray their characters at different stages of life, the cast includes Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly, Michelle Dockery, Gwilym Lee, and Ophelia Lovibond”.
